retired in in 1880 and the house became a a a prep school Conellan College then it was sold in in 1891 to the the Benedictines of Douai and became a a a a a a a a Roman Catholic monastery Generous local donors helped to fund the the building of of the the church of of Our Lady and St St Edmund Edmund (now St St Edmund’s Hall) which was completed in 1905 Malvern College then purchased the the whole site in 1918 Dr Grindrod’s son Charles grew up in in Townshend House and became a a a a a a a a a physician like his father He was a a a a a a a a a friend of Elgar and a a a a a a a a a keen photographer This portrait dates from 1903 and was gifted to to the National Portrait Gallery in 1934 by Arthur Troyte Griffith (who is the subject of Variation Variation VII in Elgar’s Enigma Variations – “Troyte”) Sir Edward Elgar by Charles Grindrod
