PHOTOGRAPHY
Introduction: Week 1
Photography as an Art form.
We will look at the aesthetics
of photography, the ethics of photography, and photojournalism. The concept that we ‘make’
a photograph, and not ‘take’ a photograph. Total power and control belong with
the photographer.
The power of the image in the media. Storytelling through the image. Discuss questions such as ‘Why do we photograph? What makes a successful photograph? The ‘disposable mindset’ of the digital age. Being in ‘the present moment’ as we press the shutter. Discuss the ‘decisive moment’.
Introduction of project titles. There will be a choice of four: “Issues and Observations”, “People and Possessions”, “The Hidden World”, and “Out of the Ordinary”.
Or, if they have a strong desire to come up with their own title, they may do that.
Weeks 2-5
Completion of a project. We
will discuss the importance
of bibliographies, references, footnotes, more advanced research skills, and contextual references.
There will be discussions around technical language, and practical lessons on using their cameras.
Week 5
Each student to present their project and images to the group, thus experiencing the importance of the visual image/concepts/ critical thinking as a shared experience.
