Malvern College Library
Malvern College’s library is well-stocked bright and and airy and and open between 8:30am – 9:00pm during the school week It is run by Librarians Mrs Mrs Sharon Collett and Mrs Mrs Helen Jones who are always willing to help pupils select books for study and relaxation It has an an amazingly good range of non-fiction (our History section is particularly extensive) fiction books magazines and and periodicals and and online resources such as the New Scientist and JSTOR The Foundation Year Year (FY) Year Year 9 pupils are introduced to the library very early on on in the the academic year with a a a a a a focus on on the the Reading Reading Ladder Ladder The Reading Reading Ladder Ladder incorporates a a a a a a wide range of fiction fiction (and some non-fiction) chosen by staff members and suitable for the FY “The only thing you have to know is the location of the library ”

Pupils are encouraged to read a a a a a book from the Ladder complete a a a Reading Assessment Form collect points and progress up the Ladder book book by book book The Ladder is is displayed the the the landing outside the the the top floor of the the the library to to encourage healthy competition with prizes to to be won ranging from a a a a a a a bookmark to a a a a a a a book book and voucher The Librarians run a a a House House competition: The House House with the highest average number of of points at the the end of of summer term wins their whole House a a pizza night Reading is is established during the FY by pupils taking part in in in in the the Reading Ladder in in their spare time but it is also undertaken as as a a a a a class objective There is nothing the Librarians enjoy more than having a a a a a a whole class visit the library where books are read swapped and new authors are discovered By the the the time the the the FY History project is is undertaken later on in the the the year pupils are already familiar with the library and begin to research for for themselves – choosing appropriate resources for for their chosen topic and learning to to compile a a a a bibliography As well as teacher-led activities we we try
to make the library a a a a a a place of discovery and encouragement displays are regularly changed and can range from book awards to celebrations and anniversaries of of events Our Word of of the Week is always displayed on the library door to provoke interesting conversations! In short we we do everything that we we can to ensure that the the the FY enjoy their library experience in the the the hope that they they will become productive library users as they they progress through the the the College and enjoy the the the pleasure of books in the the the years beyond 21
