Fortunately, I had a US family group named Henderson consisting of three generations visiting their ancestral homeland. They were perfect for TV. I took them, and John Sergeant, around Edinburgh Castle with TV cameras following our every move. This episode was later shown featuring John Sergeant, me, and the family on tour.
‘Also at the same time, the Scottish Government were looking for a photo opportunity at the Homecoming event and we were invited to meet the First Minister Alex Salmond who graciously gifted Mr Henderson with a beautifully bound copy of Burns poetry. The cameras were clicking and we featured in all the press at the time. We were also invited to take part in the Clan March up the Royal Mile to the castle where a performance took place. Marching with Clan members from around the world with my clients and John Sergeant, was a wonderful experience. Lots of extra loud cheering when John Sergeant was spotted. He had just taken part in Strictly Come Dancing so he was a weel kent face.
‘My new friend, Deirdre Kinloch Anderson kindly gifted a kilt outfit for Mr Henderson. Toni and I later had numerous meetings with Deirdre and her designer to negotiate an excellent discounted rate for an exclusive tartan. It was launched in time for our 50th Anniversary. Deirdre kindly offered her showroom for the launch with drinks and canapes.’
John F Anderson also wrote a poem to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the STGA.
The Year of Homecoming 2009
This year the S.T.G.A. has a special date
As it now has fifty years to celebrate
Of guiding people in our bonnie land
Besides lochs, mountains and scenery grand.
The legacy of Robert Burns will also shine Because of his birth in seventeen fifty-nine On a cold and wintry January day,
In the humble cottage down in Alloway.
Celebrations will occur throughout this year With parades, music and festive cheer
And many will come from far and wide,
To visit our towns, cities and countryside. All are welcome to Scotland in 2009, Hopefully the weather will be fine,
In coach or car our visitors can ride, Preferably with a Blue Badge Guide!
