What is a Lord’s Acre Sale?
The Lord’s Acre Sale began as an interdenominational movement among country churches in western North Carolina in 1930, as a means of raising funds in small congregations with limited financial resources. It remains a tradition in many United Methodist congregations today. A portion or “acre” of a church member’s land was set aside to raise crops to be sold to benefit the church. At today’s market, an acre of corn will yield about $500.00, less expenses. Livestock was also dedicated for this purpose. Those without land could set aside a portion of their needlework, craft items, or any other saleable talent they possessed.
The Lord’s Acre Supper and Sale is also an evening of fellowship to celebrate God’s goodness in our lives. Odessa First United Methodist Church’s Lord’s Acre Sale was first mentioned in the church history records in 1973 during the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Herman Hudson. This tradition will continue with your donations, contributions and most of all, your participation. Most everything sold is donated by members and friends. What comes in is a surprise to everyone! Please join us at 5:00 p.m. on October 13, 2018 and bring a friend!
