labels
The swag we encounter normally is the booty of adver- tising people, product-placement experts, licensors, and merchandisers. You can have swag of your own! Let your eye cruise the galaxy of options. Put mental circles around items that might be fun for you to make.

Sure, you can grab a Sharpie or another similar permanent marker
and write directly onto your disc. This doesn’t interfere with the playback, although some warn that the ink from a marker may eat away at the disc. (These are usually people trying to sell you an expensive “disc-save” pen.)

For a little more polish and brand- ing value, along with greater perceived quality, try labels. There are specially configured sheets of self-sticking paper you can buy at the computer store and use with your desktop printer. Be sure that you align the label perfectly when you stick it on a CD or DVD, because an off-center label can unbalance the spinning disc and cause problems, especially in slot-loading drives.
These samples come from an archiving project detailed in Chapter 7. Carolina Correa designed a jewel case for her DVD of family photos (top left). The slip of paper that slides into the case was printed on normal computer paper after being deigned with a Photoshop template (top right). Whenfolded and inserted, the five itemslisted to the left of the layout become an interactive map. Carolina created a stick-on cover for her DVD (bottom left) which was designed via a second Photoshop template (bottom right) which was then printed onto special self-adhesive sheets of paper. SWAG
Swag is a delicious term, isn’t it? It is used widely in refer- ence to heavily logoed premium items that are given away or sold by companies. Think of pirates, burying their swag as they drink from bottles of rum.
