CHAPTER 6: DISPLAY AND DISTRIBUTION
[ 231 ]
The latter is seen best in iDVD, Ap- ple’s program for making interactive digital video discs. Let me emphasize the word interactive. While backing up and storing data is a survival function all its own, there is a higher order of craft when you arrange information

in ways that encourage others to use that information according to their interests and needs.
Many new Windows PCs come with Corel’s InterVideo’s WinDVD Creator software. This all-in-one application al- lows you to digitize video, edit, import pictures, design layout and menus, and burn your DVD. The only thing it doesn’t do is print the label, make du- plicate discs, and then wrap, stamp, and post them to family members.
Interactive design is a science
and an art form in its own right, of course. These pages hardly touch on that. Perhaps a future volume will. The emphasis here is on the fact that authoring an interactive DVD—using whomever’s software—is a creative act that requires a unique cluster of skills.

iDVD. Drop Zones come with some of the Themes. Here you deposit images, movies, and audio files. Called out in the interface screen capture are the Add Button, Scrubber Bar, and Motion Button. The Map Button is important. Use this to plan the content structure and pathways your users will follow. The Scrubber Bar and Motion Button let you move slowly through different items in the DVD. The Burn Button and Editing Panes are at the bottom right.
PDF is a file format created and owned by Adobe Systems. It embeds text, images, and formatting of text, making documents appear exactly the same across platforms.
WinDVD Creator. My example of Jamaican flowers made it irresistible, if totally cheesy, to pick the flower’s theme that I found among the menu themes of this application. This example also shows the “Daisy” button, which I consider kind of funky too. The Toolbar sits beside the Process Tabs, which do the work of capture, editing, and drag-and-drop design work. A Make Movie button actually burns the DVD. The Preview Window is where you see what the viewer sees, whether you are making a movie, a slide show, or a DVD. Tabs of Media Libraries and Time Line work together while you are authoring.

QuickTime is a wrapper file format that can contain many different com- pression codecs. Dealing with video formats and compression is a kind of a black art and, thankfully, rests outside the scope of this book.
