CHAPTER 7: PROJECT IDEAS
[ 263 ]
Step 2: Setting up the blog. Once I had decided to
set up some kind of Web-based information booth, I looked at hosting Web sites and Apple’s iweb and other things until I decided to use Blogger. It’s free, it’s easy, and it looks decent. If you want to customize, you can dig deep, but if you don’t, the starting templates look good. I chose one of their standard ones, then tweaked the colors a bit.

Blogger is very simple to use. I have a folder on my com- puter desktop full of possible photos, and once I pick one, it’s easy to upload into a new post. I’ve found that for every dead end I’ve hit technically, it’s easy to find a solution out there
in the blogger community. For example, I Googled “photo in blogger header” and got step-by-step instructions. Although generally, as the process continues to move away from strict html, it’s pretty intuitive.
Peter’s entry read, “Inspiration for Rosina. I’m repainting this Corcovado picture because I found the perfect companion for it—two things to look forward to seeing. Love you. ph”
Step 3: Decide what information you want to provide along with your commentary. In this case, Peter’s blog became a clearinghouse of medical information.
I found myself listening more closely to doctors and mak- ing sure that I understood what they were saying, because once I had the blog, it meant explaining this medical info to a bunch of people. Often it also meant getting more info off the Web, and adding the links is an easy way (amazing, actually) to direct someone who really wants to read more. Also, practical things like how to become a bone marrow donor or directions to the hospital or giving blood are links that exploit the Internet in all its glory. It’s a great way to add information without taking up a lot of space.
These are links about health care that Peter found or that friends and doctors provided.

Above is a typical entry. It is dated and has a title. In this case Peter chose a picture that provided a metaphor for Rosina’s status. Every entry has one or more images. The gallery (right) samples the range of images: from images of the kids to shots from Peter’s albums to current shots of the hospital. Peter Hastings
