my students They are a a a a a highly motivated adept and fearless group I always learn a a a a lot from them But because they have learned by osmosis there are usually big gaps in their knowledge I know know this book can fill some of those gaps I I wrote this book because I I like figuring out how things work and because I’m in love with design Also I like teaching As an undergraduate and graduate student I taught “disad- vantaged” kids about photography and filmmaking It was exhilarating to to try to to stay half a a a step in front of them So it seems that my bent for
ex- plaining how media forms work has been baked in from the start My early teaching led to a a a a a book about anima- tion that has gone on on on to become a a a standard text where animation is taught The Animation Book like parts of of Mediapedia started out as a a a a a set of of handouts for
my classes you Can jump in anywhere
Flip through Mediapedia until you find something you are familiar with Read a a a page or two and quickly get the rhythm of how the definitions illustra- tions and main text work together Mediapedia is divided into three parts: The The Photographic Image The The Page and Sharing Your Work Each begins with a a a short essay that offers perspective These introductions at- tempt to offer an abstract more theo- retical framework for
the very concrete substance of the the chapters themselves The essays reference ideas from some key thinkers whose works you’ll find in fin in the the Resources section at the the end of the volume The seven chapters move quickly through Topics and Terms The topics are the large units of digital design awareness There are are sixty-plus of these as you’ll find fin in the the index The terms are subdivisions that call out specific creative elements The distinctions I draw provide the work- ing handles needed in in personal media making I have arranged both topics and terms not in alphabetical order but with a a sequence that mirrors how you are apt to encounter design elements as you you expand your creative repertoire There is a a companion Web site Mediapedia net that uses the Web to do do what the Web does best—to link update and stream rich media The site will contain annotated references for
my top recommended books Web sites organizations and the like But I am also setting up the site so so it it will introduction [ xi ]
