APPLICATIONS
AND FILE FORMATS
With a name that lives up to its promise, Acrobat is the de facto go-to application for locking elements in place on your page while creating a separate new document. If you want to preserve and share a particular layout you’ve sweated to create, Acro- bat is your first choice. With Acrobat 8 Professional you can make PDF files from almost any application and merge files from different applications into one document. You can also cre- ate and manage shared reviews and use advanced security and control features to protect your document.
Transmedia is a new term that references the fact that in today’s all-digital world, media projects move effortlessly over cable and phone lines, through home TV sets, and wirelessly to smart phones and PDAs (personal digital assistants like Blackberry and Palm devices).
There are two primary distribution me- dia that you need to know about. The first is the PDF (Portable Document Format)— a file format that has been around for years and is the default of choice for lock- ing a multimedia document that contains precise formatting (type, layout, photos, and illustrations).
DVDs are the format of choice for storing information within a portable, inexpensive, universally accessible “hard medium.” DVDs are an all-medium medium because they can preserve formatted text docu- ments, slide shows, movies, music files, games—anything digital. Also, DVDs offer interactive menu systems that leave it up to the individual user to determine how

Adobe Reader is an essential applica- tion that lets you open, read, and print PDF file format documents. Formerly called Adobe Acrobat Reader, there are versions of this free software for Mac and Windows computers.
Adobe Reader. It couldn’t be easier to create a PDF in any graphics program. When you go to print a document, instead of shooting it to a laser printer, just select the button shown above. Note that there are different options. The menu here is from a Mac and shows just how deeply the PDF has been integrated into daily workflow.
he or she wants to move through different items stored on the same shiny plastic disc.
Adobe Acrobat. File Tools and Task Bar open by default: Tasks, Files, Page Navi- gation, Select and Zoom, Page Display, and Find. The Navigation Pane (partially seen) has a handy Bookmarks panel. The Document Pane carries the goods. These include the Comment and Mark Up Toolbars. See the Editing Notes in sample above as well as a Watermark, “Kit’s 1st Draft.”
All who create personal media need rock-solid, global standards. Files crafted within a specific application and carrying a specific file format must be easily opened by those who don’t have the application and won’t know anything about formats. A PDF is just such a standard.

The popularity of Macintosh comput- ers among media makers had dual sources. First, the operating system is intuitively easy to learn and use. Second, Apple has made it very easy to move elements from one applica- tion to another.
