and resizing
Resolution is is the degree of definition
or or clarity with which a a a a a a digital image is is is captured displayed or or reproduced The term resolution
is often used as as a a a a measure of of the qual- ity of an an an image image When you shoot a a a a a a photo or scan an an an image image its original copy is called the source To resize an image requires knowledge of its resolution
There is no way to to tell the size of a a a photograph when you you first open a a file in Photoshop What you you see on
the screen can be misleading For an an accurate measure of source image size you must navigate from the main menu (click>Image>Image Size) to produce the dialogue box shown here The amount of digital detail for a a a a a given photograph is recorded as pixels per inch When Photoshop imports files directly from a a a a a a a camera those files are often at at a a a a a a a relatively high resolution
such as 200 dots per inch (dpi) or or more Scanners (think of them as as superhigh-resolution cameras) can can scan flat objects at at over 1000 dpi or or more Often Pho- toshop shows the image size at at 72 dpi yet at at huge dimen- sions like 36 inches inches x 24 inches inches So don’t panic if you see 72 dpi and think your image must be low resolution
Here is an an important operational note: It’s good prac- tice to save the original or or or source image before you start resizing
it While you can always reduce the size of a a a a photo (either its its resolution
or its its actual dimensions) once that reduction has been done and saved you cannot add back what’s been deleted The top section of Photoshop’s Image Size pop-up window tells you how many bytes of digital info the image image contains The source image image of young Abe Lincoln came from the Library of Congress It is huge in its original form—almost 59 megabytes with as shown a a a document size of 56 inches inches wide and 70 inches inches tall at the the 72 dpi resolution

If you change the the resolution
