Professor awarded Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

Tak-Sing Wong named an an an outstanding engineer who shows exceptional promise for leadership in in in in science and and technology
On July 2 Tak-Sing Wong the Wormley Early Career Professor of of of Mechanical Engineering at at Penn State was named a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a recipient of of of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers
(PECASE) by President President Donald J Trump According to to to the the the the White House the the the the PECASE is the the the the highest honor bestowed by the the the the the United States government to to to “outstanding scientists and and and engineers who who are are beginning their independent research careers and and and who who show exceptional promise for leadership in science and and technology
”
This award acknowledges the the the contributions that Wong has made to to the the the the advancement of engineering and the the the the community service spurred by his work His lab the the the Laboratory for Nature Inspired Engineering seeks to to to translate phenomena found in in in in in nature in in in in in order to to develop innovative technology
with the the ultimate goal of of improving the quality of human life Wong was recently promoted to associate professor within the Department of of Mechanical Engineering and holds a a a a a a a a a a a a a courtesy appointment with biomedical engineering He was also named one of of of the the the world’s top 35 35 innovators under the the the age of of of 35 35 in in in in in the the the prestigious Massachusetts Institute Institute of of of Technology’s Technology Technology Review in in 2014 the the New Innovator Award at at at the the Institute Institute of Electrical and and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) International Conference and and the the 2018 Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award from the the American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Wong co-founded a a a a a a a a startup company in in 2018 spotLESS Materials to market an an an an innovative liquid-entrenched smooth surface (LESS) coating coating The sprayable anti-fouling coating coating can address sticky problems across industries By creating self- cleaning surfaces surfaces the coating could mitigate hazards and costs associated with maintaining surfaces surfaces prone to contamination Such use could could save millions of of gallons of of water every day which could could be directed toward other important activities or or or to to to drought- stricken areas or or or to to to regions experiencing chronic water scarcity “It is is is a a a a a a a a great honor to to to receive this this award and I I would like to to to take this this opportunity to to to to to to thank my research group members who work tirelessly to to to to translate nature inspirations into new technology
