On June 24 Jacqueline O’Connor associate professor of of mechanical engineering at at at at at Penn State delivered an an invited presentation at at at at the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on on on on on Laser Diagnostics in in in in in Energy and Combustion Science highlighting her work in in in in laser diagnostics in in in in engine technologies The GRC “Exploiting and and Developing Optical Diagnostics for Combustion and and and Related Energy Technologies ” was was a a a a a a a a a a a unique opportunity to to to share share new insights its purpose was was to to to share share and and create novel ways to to to gather measurements from deep inside these chemically reacting systems “The idea idea of these Gordon conferences is to to to get get a a a a a small focused community together to to to share the the the the newest ideas in the the the the field ” O’Connor said O’Connor’s lab the the Reacting Flow Dynamics Laboratory focuses on on on on the the the issues affecting reacting flows for energy and propulsion applications like gas turbine engines To further understand the the the the critical machinery and and and improve their efficiency she researches high-speed laser diagnostics and and and and other state-of- the-art experimental techniques to enhance combustion and and hydrodynamics “These environments produce so much heat that getting instrumentation to survive is is is difficult ” O’Connor explained “So there is is is a a a a a a a a a community of scientists who are developing optical diagnostics with lasers in in in order to better understand what’s going on ” Her presentation “Understanding Three-Dimensional Transient Behavior in in in in in in Engines: Studies Inspired by Work in in in in in in Diesel and and Gas Turbine Engines Engines ” detailed her soon-to-be-published work with mechanical engineering doctoral student Ankit Tyagi “I “I talked about using these new diagnostic methods in in in in realistic engines ” O’Connor said “I’m really trying to bridge the the divide between two technologies since few people work across both gas turbine engines engines and piston engines engines ” The invitation to present at at at this this conference was a a a a a a a a demonstration of her unique contributions and expertise in in this this area She said “Since all the the talks were invited it it meant a a a a a a a a a a a lot to to have my peers ask me me to to do this It was a a a a a a a a a a a nice validation of the the work ” Through the conference O’Connor returned with impactful feedback from her fellow scientists As she continues to bridge the the the the gap between these these two technologies these these insights will help pave the the the the way for more efficient and valuable combustion engines “I was glad to to be able to to showcase the unique work we’re doing and and enhance it by building stronger collaborations and and meeting new groups ” she said “This conference is is one of the the the the only places where these people come together so the the the the experience will be really valuable going forward!”
