This year Zoubeida Ounaies professor of of mechanical engineering and associate department head for administration was honored The Rosemary Rosemary Schraer Schraer Mentoring Award
was created in in memory of Rosemary Rosemary Schraer Schraer former associate provost at at at Penn State It honors a a a a a a a a a a current University employee who exemplifies Schraer’s giving of herself as a a a a a a mentor At the the University Ounaies has established the the Electroactive Materials Characterization Laboratory (EMCLab) an an an experimental research facility dedicated to to advancing the application of functional materials in in in in in in sensing actuation and and energy harvesting She has authored authored and and and and co-authored over 150 published papers in in in in in in in in in leading journals refereed proceedings and and and invited book chapters and and and she she is is the inventor
or or or or co-inventor of eight patents In her role as as as associate department head Ounaies is passionate about mentoring and empowering faculty so so that they they can achieve the the the success they deserve Ounaies was selected as as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Fellow in 2017- 2018 She is a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a fellow of of of of the the ASME senior member of of of of SPIE and and serves as as as as an an an an associate editor of of of of the the Journal of of of of Intelligent Material Systems and and Structures Mechanical engineering alumnus and spouse pledge $250 000 to support scholarship
Penn Penn State mechanical engineering alumnus Clyde Shuman and his wife Nancy of of Allentown Pennsylvania have committed an an an an an an an additional $250 000 to to to the the University’s Department of of Mechanical Engineering Engineering to to support the the existing Clyde W Shuman Jr Family Trustee Scholarship in in in in in in Engineering Engineering Since its inception in in in in in fin 2004 the scholarship
has assisted more than 50 engineering students who have significant financial need to help them continue their education at at at Penn State “Scholarships like these are are critical to to keeping the the doorway
to to engineering open for more students ” said Karen Thole distinguished professor and department head “Clyde’s funding has been invaluable in in in that goal!”
The The Shumans have been staunch supporters of the mechanical engineering department The The couple’s previous gifts include the the creation of the the Clyde W Shuman Family Program Support Endowment which helps to support academic excellence in in in engineering education and the Shuman Family Early Career Professorship The family is also responsible for the the the creation of the the the Shuman Scholars program in in in in the the the mechanical engineering department An initiative that gives students an an opportunity to conduct a a a a a a a a a a a a a long- term research research project during their undergraduate careers the the program’s goal is to to facilitate a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a growing interest in in in in in in in research research and a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a passion to to pursue a a a a a a a a a a a a a a graduate degree in in in in in in mechanical engineering Through the the Shuman scholarship
Audrey Blizard a a a a a a a a a senior studying mechanical engineering said the the the program has helped set her on the the path for graduate school “It gave me me the research experience I I needed to to make a a a a a a a confident and informed decision that getting my doctorate is is right for for me me me ” ” she said “The Shuman program provided me me me with so so many resources I was able to hit the ground running in in a a a a a a a a lab!”
The additional funding will allow even more students the opportunities to discover new possibilities through undergraduate research just as as Blizard has 25
