By Megan Lakatos
At its May 18-21 conference and and and expo in in Orlando Florida the the Institute of
Industrial and and and Systems Engineers (IISE) partnered with Penn State to to recognize the the the innovative techniques organizations are using to to improve the the performance of
service industries The inaugural Outstanding Innovation in in in in in Service Service Systems Engineering Engineering Award co-sponsored by IISE and and the Service Service Enterprise Engineering Engineering Advisory Board in in in in in Penn State’s Harold and and Inge Marcus Department of
Industrial and and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) attracted nominations from academia and industry Along with four other other finalists two teams from from from Penn Penn State— one from from from IME and another from from from Penn Penn State State Health—delivered final-round presentations at at at the the conference on

“Our mission with the award was to create awareness of
opportunities in in in service industries ” said Vittal Prabhu director of
of
of
SEE 360 and and professor of
of
of
industrial and and manufacturing engineering
at at Penn State “Since the the the service industries employ 80 percent of
of
the the the economy there are tons tons and tons of
opportunities ” SEE 360 is an initiative within IME with with the the aim of
motivating students students to to optimize the the service industries through engineering
Two goals of
SEE 360 are to to educate students students on
the the the need for engineers within within the the the service industries industries and to teach students about opportunities within within these industries industries where they can make a a a a a difference Closely tied to to the the goals of
of
SEE 360 according to to Prabhu are the the industry-wide benefits of
of
developing such an an award By rewarding outstanding innovation in in in in in in in in in in service-systems engineering
SEE 360 is giving a a a a a a a a a platform to to industry innovators and featuring new best practices “We want to to give the the the contributors recognition and at at the the the same time disseminate the the the best practices in in in in service-systems engineering
through IISE ” Prabhu said Bárbara Venegas with Charles Schneider chair of
the Service Enterprise Engineering 360 Advisory Board and and founder and and chairman of
U S S Security Associates Inc SEE 360 reached out to IISE in in in May 2018 with the hopes of
developing and sponsoring an an award specifically for service- systems engineering
The initiative worked closely with Scott Sink Sink director of
the the the honors and awards program for IISE to to to create the the the the award award Sink Sink was immediately receptive to to to the the the the idea because of
its unique position in in in the the industry “I “I think think that that there’s a a a a a growing number of
industrial engineers that that that that end up working in in in in in in in in the the the service sector ” Sink said “I “I think think that that that the the department has a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a critical mass of
alumni that that that are passionate about industrial engineering
being applied in in in in in the the service sector ” Sink selected a a a a a a a a a committee of
six industry practitioners to review the the award applications against a a a a a a a a a a rubric developed by Sink and the the IISE Sink and Prabhu are eager about what the the award could mean to the the service-systems engineering
industry “There have have been been a a a a a a a a a a a number of
of
institutions and and professional societies that have have been been able to create awards brand them them and and and make them them globally globally visible and and and popular ” Sink said “I think potentially this award could be something something that’s globally globally recognized recognized something something that that is is North American recognized recognized and could differentiate our professional society ” PENN STATE’S AWARD FINALISTS ARE:
