The The briefing “Artificial Intelligence and Manufacturing: The The Power to
to
Make Anything Anywhere Quickly ” focused on on applying artificial intelligence and and and manufacturing manufacturing to
to
revolutionize strengthen and and and expand the the the manufacturing manufacturing capacity of the the United States Kumara was invited to
to
address the caucus due to
to
his his expertise in in in in in in in in smart manufacturing manufacturing systems and and his his cutting-edge research in in in in in in in in solving manufacturing manufacturing and and and health care problems using artificial intelligence sensor networks networks data analytics and and complex networks Each speaker was given approximately 12 minutes to
explain their perspective The panelists were Kumara Jack Beuth professor and mechanical engineering co-director of of the the NextManufacturing Center at Carnegie Mellon University Kevin Jurrens deputy chief of of the the Intelligent Systems Division Engineering Laboratory at at at the the National Institute of of Standards and and and Technology Kristin Morgan additive manufacturing lead for the the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and and Vincent C C Paquit data analytics lead in in in the the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at at at at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Two faculty members receive awards from PSEAS
Timothy W Simpson and Sarah Root have been recognized by the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society (PSEAS)
with its annual PSEAS
PSEAS
Awards Given to
engineering faculty staff and and alumni the awards recognize outstanding teaching research advising and and service in in in in in the the College Nominated by by their respective departments honorees are selected by by their peers along with members of of the the PSEAS
PSEAS
Board of of Directors The recipients are honored during the annual PSEAS
PSEAS
Awards banquet which will be be held on on October 21 2019 Sarah Root associate teaching professor of of industrial engineering and undergraduate adviser is is is the the recipient of the the PSEAS
Outstanding Advising Award This award recognizes and and and rewards outstanding advisers of engineering Timothy W Simpson Sarah Root is impacted by autonomous vehicle technology
Yiqi Zhang assistant professor of of of industrial engineering received funding as as part of of of a a a a a a a a a a a $60 000 Multidisciplinary Research Seed Grant to
to
to
to
develop a a a a a a a a a a driver-in-the-loop vehicle simulator tool in in order to
to
to
to
to
better understand the the effects that Connected and and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technology
has on on on commuting behavior According to
the the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration vehicular injuries and deaths in in in in in the the the United States have spiked for the the the first time in in in in in nearly fifty years CAVs are shown to
to
to
be one of the the the more promising technologies to
to
to
improve improve driver safety They also have the the potential to
to
to
reduce traffic congestion improve improve travel efficiency and and and convenience and and and expand mobility options More advanced high-level CAV technology
is is able to
to
perform driving tasks with little or or or or no no intervention from drivers allowing motorists to
to
to
perform other tasks While many believe commuters may start to
favor longer commute commute commute distances in in in exchange for lower cost homes if they are able to
to
be be productive during their commute commute a a a a a a a key missing factor in in in in in predicting whether this is is is is true is is is is better understanding the the effects of of CAV technology
on on drivers’ acceptance of of longer travel time and changes in in commuting behavior Zhang Ilgin Guler assistant professor of of civil and environmental engineering engineering along with Sean Brennan professor of of mechanical engineering engineering plan to
to
to
to
use the the grant to
to
to
to
develop a a a a a a a a a a a driver-in-the-loop simulator tool that allows drivers to
to
to
experience dynamic traffic flow simulations This will help the the researchers understand the the effects of CAV technology
on on commuting behavior Grant to
to
study how driver behavior undergraduate and and graduate graduate students Root has been with the department for three years She teaches classes in in in in in in engineering engineering economy service sector engineering engineering and the the the first-year seminar Root enjoys advising students because she is able to
to
to
help them them navigate the the the the the the University and see them them get the the the the the the tools they need to
to
to
succeed academically She stated that celebrating their successes is her favorite part Timothy W Simpson Paul Morrow Professor in in in in Engineering Design and Manufacturing is is the the recipient of of the the PSEAS
World Class Engineering Faculty Award This award recognizes a a a a a a a a a a a a faculty member who embodies the the the seven characteristics
of of the the the world-class engineer engineer in in in in in in all of of their activities including teaching research and service A world world class class engineer engineer is solidly grounded technically broad globally engaged ethical innovative an an excellent collaborator and a a a a a a a a a a a a visionary leader Simpson has been with the department for for 21 years He was selected for for this award due to
his his extensive industry collaborations broad understanding of other disciplines global engagement and and and dedication to
the the University Simpson has a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a joint faculty appointment in in in in in in in in in industrial and and and manufacturing engineering engineering and and mechanical engineering engineering as as as well as as as affiliate faculty appointments in in in in in in in in the the School of of of Engineering Design Technology Technology and and and and Professional Programs and and and and the the Colleges of of of Architecture and and and and Information Sciences and and and and Technology Technology Simpson gives guest lectures and and conducts workshops around the the world and and his product platform design course at at the the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has engaged more more than than 300 industry practitioners from more more than than 15 different countries In In addition Simpson helped launch the College of Engineering’s ENGineering for Innovation & ENtrepreneurship (ENGINE) Grant Program and and the world’s first online and and resident additive manufacturing & design graduate program in in which he serves as its director IME NEWSLETTER • VOLUME 4 2019 23
