process in Florida typically involves pre-harvest
controlled burns to remove dry leaves and excess
foliage. It is then combine-style harvested. The stalks
are cut at the base and then transported to sugar mills.
The Florida Forest Service regulates the prescribed
burns, which happen from October to May. Some
argue that the burns make harvesting more efficient,
but others say that it generates large amounts of smoke
and particulate matter which impacts air quality and
public health.
Regardless, sugarcane crops are a significant source of
biomass. Biofuels are made from the biomass or fibrous
residue of the harvested sugarcane. The fibrous residue
is called bagasse. Bagasse can expand Florida’s role in
the industry of bioenergy. Bagasse can also be worked
back into sandy soils. The organic matter improves
infiltration and decreases unwanted water runoff.
Bagasse increases the water-holding capacity of the soil
and helps retain soil nutrients.
