 Re-visiting the SKMS
All people and organizations have tendencies to predetermine which items of information they will or will not consider. If you were planning the purchase of an automobile, considerations would include color, model, cost to purchase, cost to operate, miles per gallon, availability within your locality, new only, etc. Each of these pre-conditions limits the choices available to you as a consumer. They may cause you to miss a deal, such as the lady selling her soon to be ex-husband’s beloved mint condition classic mustang for $200.00. If you have already ruled out a used car, then this choice probably would not even appear on your radar. Organizations are often faced with the same pre-condition situation where decision makers will determine relevancy of information before having seen the information. The decision is really to “not be shown” irrelevant data. Although this is necessary in many cases to aid in minimizing the amount of “noise” that could be presented to the decision-maker, it has a danger in that it can also lead to incorrect or limiting decisions. At the SKMS level, information has been produced and presented by IT and now must be added to the decision maker’s own experience, external influences or data, additional partner or supplier requirements (including abilities or inabilities) and expectations.
