Why is ITIL Successful?
ITIL presents a practical approach to service management. It advocates that you begin your improvement journey by “borrowing” from suggestions that work (frameworks), and then modifying them as needed to do what works. By aligning the entire organization to follow a common set of management practices, organizations will be empowered to deliver
standardized quality IT services that deliver business value. Key characteristics contributing to the global success of ITIL include:
Vendor-neutral: Practices can be used in any IT organization because they are not based upon any particular technology platform or industry. ITIL is owned by the British government Cabinet office and not tied to any commercial proprietary practice or solution.
Non-prescriptive: Use only the portions that are applicable to your organization. Modify as needed.
Best Practices: Contributions to ITIL have come from some of the best- in-class services providers around the world. By analyzing the practices used by the best-in-class, a common set of “successful” activities have been identified.
