Good time to Breed in British Columbia
By Jim Reynolds
It’s a good time to get into the horseracing industry in British Columbia—especially the breeding end of the business. Racing is in what looks like capable hands dedicated to ensuring not just its survival but it’s growth. The installation of slot machines at Hastings with a revenue share into purse structure and the promise of added racing days has given hope to the horsemen of the Province. The incentive programs involving breeding bonuses and buying and importing of new mares has generated new interest and the stallion picture here looks healthy with the success stories of such sires Katahaula County, Regal Intention, Vying Victor and Alfaari to name a few.
And to the stallion ranks this year has been added some new and exciting blood. Bloodlines that are classic, modern and should prove good crosses and out crosses with our broodmare population.
The bloodline of A.P. INDY arrives in BC. with FISHER POND a 6 year old son of the US Horse of the Year and leading sire. He will stand at Gloucester Downs in British Columbia.
Toronto billionaire Eugene Melnyk purchased FISHER POND for $800,000 as a yearling. A solid performer on the New York circuit he won the Lawrence Realization Handicap as a 3 year old and was twice third in the Gallant Fox Handicap at Aqueduct. His dam Chipeta Springs is by ALYDAR.
"He has impeccable conformation and great disposition," says farm manager Jennifer Warner. "You can’t help but fall in love with him." FISHER POND will stand for $3,000
Another stallion prospect from the New York circuit to arrive in BC this spring is PERFECT SCORE. The Kentucky bred son of Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner PERSONAL HOPE was retired sound at age eight after 69 starts—winning black type at two and three including the $100,000 Grade 3 Bayshore Stake at Aqueduct. PERFECT SCORE will stand at Jason and Shannon Inkster’s Fast Track Farms in Salmon Arm, B.C for $1,500
While not a new stallion to BC one of the more interesting to arrive on the lower mainland this year is Amaruk who has been
standing in the Okanagan for Bruce Unwin and Bruce Lighthouse. Lightly raced and lightly bred Amaruk has sired only seven runners but among them is the good stakes placed filly April Foolish and the exciting FIVE POINT STAR, one of the brighter lights on the BC racing scene last year, both bred by Unwin and Lighthouse.
Amaruk, by the South African multiple champion WOLF POWER, has classic breeding with a pedigree that includes Princequillo, the speedy Johns Joy, Nashrullah, Bold Ruler and Man o’ War. He will stand at Road’s End Farm in Langley, BC for $2,000.
"He should be an excellent outcross to the Northern Dancer line," says Roads End owner Jack Bennett.
