Assiniboia Downs Forty-Seventh Season Underway/New Manitoba Jockey Club Agreement in Place with Manitoba Lotteries
Another exciting season of thoroughbred racing began at Assiniboia Downs on Sunday, May 1 and signaled the start of 75-days of live racing for the 2005 season. The season will end on Sunday, September 25.
Post Times are 1:00 p.m. on Sundays and Holidays. Because Friday, July 1 is a Canadian statutory holiday, post time that day will also be 1:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings’ post time is 7:00 p.m. During the 2005 season Tuesday evening racing will also be featured from June 21 to August 23 with a post time of 7:00 p.m.
The 2005 season will witness a total purse distribution of $5.5 million and includes the $100,000 purse offered for the 57th annual running of the Manitoba Lotteries Derby on Monday, August 1.
The Manitoba Lotteries Derby
Day will also feature the $40,000
Winnipeg Futurity, the $40,000
Jack Hardy Stakes and the
$40,000 Wheat City Stakes, to
provide all race fans with
another action packed afternoon
of thoroughbred racing
excitement.
A total of 30 stakes races will be featured during the 2005 sea- son. The 2005 stakes races schedule begins Saturday, June 4 with the Golden Boy Stakes for three-year-olds and concludes with the $65,000 Gold Breeders’ Cup for three-year-olds & up on Sunday, September 25.
Heading into the 2005 season, over 700 horses are stabled on the backstretch and that will increase to over 800 in the coming weeks. All of the top trainers that competed here last season are returning, including Rapid City, South Dakota’s Ardell Sayler who was the 2004 season trainer champion. Ardell enjoyed 40 wins in 234 starts and also recorded one stakes race victory.
Sayler has now won 6 trainer championships in the past 13 years, always has one of the largest stables on the grounds each season, and needs one more winning season to tie veteran trainer Clayton Gray who has won 7 trainer titles in his long career at Assiniboia Downs.
Clayton Gray’s top performer last season was Texas-bred mare Remeiwaterbluz. She won over $68,000 last year for owner Tom
Boyko’s Well-Being Stable and was named the 2004 season top older mare by winning the Matron Breeders’ Cup stakes and the La Verendrye stakes. Clayton and Tom are expecting some solid runs from Remi again this season. Clayton attended the Keeneland Sales throughout the winter and has some promising stars he will showcase in 2005. Clayton also reached a milestone last season notching his 500th career win as a trainer at Assiniboia Downs.
We also welcome back the “all-time career wins” trainer at Assiniboia Downs, Gary Danelson. Gary starts the season with 1010 wins compiled in over 4 decades of racing at Assiniboia Downs. Gary first raced here in 1959;
just one year after the Downs opened and has been coming here ever since. Gary’s top performer last year was Fancy Bru, owned by Gary and Ed Pawluk. Fancy Bru enjoyed earnings of over $32,000 and won the Manitoba Maturity Stakes.
Among the local trainers returning this season is Emile Corbel who finished second in the trainer standings last season behind Ardell Sayler. But, Emile was the top purse earner due to his winning more stakes races.
One of Corbel’s stars was Your Excellence. The 2-year- old colt earned over $65,000 by winning the CTHS sales stakes and the Frank Arnason Sire Stakes.

ANTIFLAM
A little History on Making History
The reason for the invention of AntiFlam was purely to help a famous 23-year-old Standardbred Stallion named Balanced Image who foundered. His situation was critical complicated by other health issues.
A product was required to ease his pain quickly and be an alternative to the necessary Analgesics that was causing severe Gastro Intestinal distress.
(The whole story can be viewed on our website or the inside back page of the Omega Alpha catalogue).
Dr. Gordon Chang creator of the Omega Alpha product line was called in for a consultation in conjunction with many Veterinarians specialists.
Dr. Chang developed AntiFlam exclusively for Balanced Image and had him off the Analgesics within 1 month. When word got out through media attention many horseman requested the product to try in their own stables.
The following is just one of the many comments we have received from trainers using Antiflam for their horses
Jimmy Takter
“Tom Ridge started receiving Omega Alpha’s Antiflam shortly after the Hambletonian to
treat his chronic foot problems. I was impressed by how quickly the horse responded to the treatment. After seeing the improvement in Tom Ridge, I started giving his stablemate
Cabrini Hanover Antiflam. On Sept. 4, just 3 short weeks following the introduction of Antiflam, Tom Ridge trotted over DuQuoin in a two-heat, all-age World Record to win the $530,000 World Trotting Derby in 3, 1:50.2. That same day Cabrini Hanover captured the $702,100 She’s A Great Lady at Woodbine in a World Record time of p,2, 1:51s. Since then I have placed my entire stable on this product.” - Jimmy Takter
