Windfields Farm Stallion Open House
New Ontario stallion, Best of the Bests(IRE) was one of the features of the Open House at Windfields which was held on Sunday, December 3. The son of Machiavellian - Sueboog, by Darsbaan is a graded stakes winner of $684,728 and has fourteen 2006 juvenile winners in his freshman crop.
Champion Mobil has settled in to his stud career which began in 2006. The popular stallion’s first foals are due to arrive in 2007.

CTHS Mixed Sale Shows Healthy Increase
The CTHS Winter Mixed Sale, held at Woodbine’s Sales pavilion on December 2 showed a 15.6% increase in gross sales from the previous year. A total of $592,500 was spent by buyers who came to the sale from parts of Canada, the U.S. and even Jamaica.
This year’s sale average was $4740, beating last year’s average by 17.5%.
The highest bid of the day was $35,000, spent by F. and C. Russo of Willowdale, Ontario. The Russos were probably pretty happy with the purchase as it had a two for one attraction to it. For their bid, they now own Noble heart, a Swain-Green Noble mare, who is in foal to Bold Executive, Canada’s leading sire.
Windways Farm Limited paid $27,000 each for two broodmares consigned by
Shannondoe Farm. One is a High Brite-Votre Bien Devouee mare in foal to Touch Gold and the other is a Matter of Honor-Betrothal mare in foal to Five Star Day.
Best price for a yearling was $22,000, paid for a dark bay filly by Deputy Commander out of Ice Tie. UN Stable of Milton, Ontario was the purchaser.
A nice angle to the sale was the $500 paid by trainer Mike DePaulo for a toy horse donated by Bit By Bit Custom Equine. DePaulo’s latest purchase might not quite have the power and speed of a Shillelagh Slew, but DePaulo will be please to know that his $500 was donated to the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society and the Woodbine Backstretch Toy Drive.
(left to right) Trainer Debbie Rombis and her partner Steve Cathcart along with brothers Mike and Chris Blake of Ascot Stud were braving the cold to look at a list of horses they were interested in. Debbie has returned to the track after recovering from a very serious training accident she had in the spring of this year. “It is amazing how much you take for granted... like just being able to walk. I’m thankful I’m here.” said Debbie.
The Hill ‘n’ Dale barn was continuously busy with inspections before and throughout the sale.
Photo Left: Hip No. 32 Holy Bull Broodmare, Holy Hour, believed in foal to Peaks and Valleys, was purchased for $19,000 by James Mann from Consignor, Agent Richard Hogan.
T.C.Westmeath Stud Farm owner John Carey was promoting his new stallion, Old Forester, at the sale.

I was slowed down because I did some damage to my knee. I’m going to have some surgery over the winter and come back in the spring fresh and ready to go. Obviously the Plate Trial stands out for me. It was great to win on Pipers Thunder, for Chiefswood Stable and trainer Eric Coatrieux. That’s a good quality horse so I’m looking forward to riding for him
again next year. I also hope to team back up with Bob Tiller again. I rode a pretty nice filly, Midnight Shadow for him. She ended up winning three Stakes races.
