It was in 1976 that Dale quietly mentioned he had a kid “who’s going to be really good rider”. The young man was Chris McGregor, a groom and hot walker, who after two years began galloping for Dale. Chris went on to become an extremely successful jockey. Alan Cuthbertson came west from Toronto in 1966, riding many winners for Dale. Sandy Shields rode for the Diamond D trainer, and is pictured in some early sixties win photos.
When asked to name some of his favorite horses, Dale identified Jimmy Justice, Ky Winner, Libby’s Love, Lil Ol Gal, Fair March, Mandalero, Shady Remark and Dark Hours. Hundreds of thoroughbreds have called his stable home, for a while at least. Many of Dale’s retired horses have found new identities as broodmares, hunters or jumpers, chuck wagon horses, and ranch or saddle horses. He studies pedigrees and sale catalogues intently and he has purchased stock at dozens of yearling sales, not only in Alberta, but also in British Columbia, Washington, Florida, California and Kentucky.
Dale’s influence can best be described as that of a mentor which is how Dale learned horse racing, and how he passes on knowledge to youngsters who yearn for it; who share a passion for thoroughbreds and racing. In point of fact, all businesses and industries need a mentoring program to train for the future. Knowledge is meant to be shared, it should not to be held in exclusion. Some people are merely hired to do a job; the lucky ones find a mentor, and an energized meaning to life.
Successful businesses clearly understand one thing – there must be a strategy to attract good people, a process to retain them, to nurture their strengths, improve their skills, and educate to their potential. Also, there should be rapport, a good measure of trust, and most times an unspoken understanding of the mentor pupil relationship. Every one of us can recall special people who have influenced our thinking, believed in our abilities and became inspirational in our lives.
“The Colonel” learned from horsemen who were successful and has empowered others by sharing his values, energy, passion and talent. In doing so, Dale truly personifies the definition of a mentor.
