Signal-Health, on track for national growth Helping horses with debilitating conditions to thrive again.
Signal-Health LLC came to life because of a horse named Hapsburg. Barbara Socha’s 17 year old thoroughbred gelding at that time was suffering from anhidrosis and had not sweat at all during the previ- ous two summers even though she had tried all the usual things recommended for non-sweating. Bar- bara had no other options left so she started making arrangements to nd a new home for her horse back in Massachusetts where he had previously lived and still had some adoring fans. Before arrangements for the move were nalized, she heard about Equiwinner patches from the UK and the money back guarantee they offered. It was a relief to try something new at no nancial risk. With Equiwinner, Hapsburg started sweating on the third day of the ten-day treatment and is still comfortably spending every summer in Florida.
while in Florida for winter training, was still having success in June when Barbara met up with him again at Belmont Park in New York. Another trainer who also treated a bad bleeder in February of 2007 said the horse became claimer of the year at Finger Lakes Race Track in 2007.
Trainers are offering testimonials of their success in- cluding winning stakes races with talented horses that would not have achieved their potential unless their chronic conditions had been successfully treated.
Barbara was so impressed with the long term results, and the fact that the patches also treated other debilitating conditions in horses that she wanted to start selling them. She worked hard to become the US and Canadian distributor. Her previous experience as a marketing executive at Staples in Boston and at na- tional Canadian retailers helped her convince Thera- pina Ltd., the developer of Equiwinner in the UK, that she had not only the equine knowledge, but also the know-how to grow the business. Signal-Health LLC was started in Wellington on January 1, 2007, just three months after treating her own horse.
In addition to a web site (www.signal-health. com), advertising and trips across the country to race tracks, word of mouth has been a strong sales builder.
Equiwinner resets the horse’s electrolyte balance in ten days, something that no other product can do. Nothing goes into the body of the horse so there are no side effects.
Brian Prichard, who lives in Loxahatchee Groves, runs his thoroughbreds at Calder Race Course in the summer and at Gulfstream Race Track in the winter. He has used Equiwinner on horses that just weren’t doing well, either non-sweating or just not having a healthy coat and said, “They became healthy from the inside out”. Earlier this month, he treated his horse, How’s Your Halo, just for “good measure”. His coat improved and he came in second in Calder’s $400,000 25th Running of the Smile Sprint Handicap.
Signal-Health has expanded the marketing to in- clude the sport horse market with ads in national mag- azines. There have been a few high pro le eventing horse deaths this year from pulmonary hemorrhage and Barbara wants to get the Equiwinner information out to this segment of the market. Also, locally, and in all of the southeast states, anhidrosis is the big prob- lem during the hot and humid summer months. It can affect any horse, whether young or older, pleasure or competitive.

Signal-Health’s rst targets were the thoroughbred and standardbred racing industries, conveniently pres- ent in south Florida in the winter months. For race- horses, Equiwinner patches are used to stop bleeding (EIPH Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage) and chronic tying-up (Azoturia) as well as non-sweating (Anhidrosis).
As it turned out, Signal-Health’s rst customers were trainers who had desperate situations, where some horses were bleeding even after Lasix treat- ment, the drug they are allowed to use on race day to stop bleeding. They had tried everything to stop these horses from bleeding and had no other options left.
“Frankly, I was a little worried that Equiwinner was being put to the highest tests and wondered whether it would work on these tough cases.”

Equiwinner was successfully treating “bleeders” in other countries where Lasix is not allowed so trainers have fewer op- tions. Equiwinner is readily used to treat all kinds of bleeders.
