McClachrie no longer in “third gear” By Harlan Abbey
McClachrie, who described her as “an off-the-pace sprinter.”
McClachrie’s father U. D. McClachrie trained at Fort Erie and she was riding at an early age, showing lots of hunters and jumpers that were off-the-track Thoroughbreds. “And they got sold when they started winning ribbons,” she remembered.
She began riding in Quarter Horse races at Picov Downs and exercising Thoroughbreds for trainers like Tom Bowden, Ralph Biamonte and Steven Owens, “but it was too much
of a struggle to get my weight down, although I did ride one race at Woodbine, I think I wound up fourth of 13. I broke Foxtrail when I rode for Colebrook Farm and I also rode Air Cooled.”
One of the horses in the second- year head trainer’s shedrow is Tahana, who was bred by her mother. He won two races in ‘06 but didn’t have much success last season. “Mom was going to sell him as a riding horse,” Denyse said,”so I bought him. He shows speed in the mornings but for a while he wasn’t showing in his races. Then he ran like a champ, nished third in fast time (l:10 plus for six furlongs) for a eld of $4,000 claimers.”
Other horses McClachrie trains
are Ian’s Rocket, a ten-year-old (“My trooper”) who had three thirds in his rst four starts; Charming Country, a recent claim who appears to like a route; and an up-and-coming three- year-old, Under Seven.
Regarding her profession of being a head trainer, she commented: “It’s a tough game but, hopefully, if you’re persistent it’ll pay off. You give your horses 100 percent of your ability and hope they give it back to you.”

It took Fort Erie trainer Denyse McClachrie three months to get out of “third gear.”
Eight Racing Hall of Fame jockeys will compete against each other in a pari-mutual wagering event at Santa Anita Park on October 18 as a prelude to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on October 24 & 25.
Despite being the third-lon-
gest shot in the seven horse eld
of $7,500 claimers, Chris Grif th
and the Shale Wagman-owned
three-year-old lly “broke free
early... opened a gap”... and the
outcome was “never in doubt” according to the Racing Form chart. Ace It won the six-furlong race by eight lengths and paid $28.00.
The Hall of Fame jockeys competing will be Angel Cordero Jr., 65; Jacinto Vasquez, 64; Sandy Hawley, 59; Pat Day, 55; Chris McCarron, 53; Jerry Bailey, 51; Gary Stevens, 45; and Julie Krone, 45.
Jockey Legends Race
She had six third-place nishes from the rst eight starts by her ve-horse stable until Ace It won the ninth race on Tues- day, Aug. 5 -- and the ve-year- old Kentucky-bred (by Cape Canaveral-Salt It by Salt Lake) did it emphatically.
The event, dubbed The Living Legends Race, will be an allowance race contested at sprint distance for California- bred horses. Each horse will be assigned 126 pounds.
Her early speed was somewhat of a surprise to
