ALLAN DUNN CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
“He hated to lose, and he hated us to lose.” said Cathy who added with a chuckle, “He sold more Girl Guide cookies at the racetrack than anyone else!”
Around the same time Allan had also helped to build a replica of city hall out of toothpicks for another school project. Upon completion he stating to his children, “if you are going to do something, do it right...and don’t lose.”
Friend Robin Platts remembers Allan as being more like a father figure to him and recalls their trips to Chicago and Florida as some of the best times they shared in their 20 year friendship. “He was a great person, “said Robin when asked about their friendship, “He was so much fun. There are lots of stories, lots of good times, the trips were the best. I miss him dearly.”
Hugh Chapman echoes the same sentiments by saying that Allan was a “good guy” and a “great friend.”
“Allan was a really good friend over the
years.” said Hugh, who mentioned that they
would often play pool at Brass Taps on Rexdale, “You don’t find too many good friends on the racetrack who you want to hang out with after work. He was a really good friend over the years. A good buddy.”
Allan was 74 when he passed away from a heart attack on May 4, 2005. He leaves behind his partner of 25 years, Sandra McLean, as well as his four children, Cathy Clozza, Alana McGinley, Mark Dunn and Darlene Fletcher, and his 8 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on May 7 and Allan was buried at Glendale Memorial Gardens. A special reception was held in the Northern Dancer room at Woodbine Racetrack following the funeral.
Stafford Stables named a horse Allan Blue after Allan Dunn, who was fre- quently seen wearing his favourite colour blue in the Stafford barn. Seen here in this 1979 Woodbine photo are (L-to-R) Stafford’s sons, Jockey Joey Belowus, Mrs. Stafford, Col. Baker, and Trainer Gil Rowntree.
Found among Allan’s old newspaper clippings was this undated published piece:
“An agent’s loyalty to his jockey knows no bounds. When Avelino Gomez was spilled into the slop Thursday, his agent Allan Dunn dashed from the backstretch grandstand across the Marshall turf course to the main track to aid his rider. Dunn didn’t make it. After vaulting the outside rail he took a header into the slop, too.”
Team Barbados triumphs in Jockey Challenge
Although they don't hail from Barbados, jockeys Emile Ramsammy and Ray Sabourin were a potent one-two punch for Team Barbados in the Jockey Challenge at Woodbine on June 18.
Points were awarded to the top-four finishers in the designated races for the challenge, the Barbados Classic and the Incitatus Cup. The latter race was in honour of one of the greatest Bajan-bred thoroughbreds of all time, a Gold Cup winner in Barbados and a stakes victor at Woodbine.
Five points were awarded for a first-place finish, three for second, two for third and one point for a fourth-place finish.
In the first race of the two-race Jockey Challenge, the Barbados Classic, Trinidad native Ramsammy, who won all four races he had a mount on that day, guided 20-1 longshot My Imperial Dancer to victory for Team Barbados, earning five points for the triumph. Sudbury, Ontario, native Ray
Sabourin, aboard Platinum Medallion, finished second, picking up another three points for his squad.
Jim McAleney finished third with Dieppe, good enough to earn one point for Team Canada.
In the second and final race of the Challenge, the Incitatus Cup, Emma Jayne Wilson, added to the Canadian side after she piloted Flashy Dash to victory.
Coggins Hill, under Patrick Husbands, was fourth.
In a close finish, Team Barbados defeated Team Canada by a score of 9-7.
