Two Associations Have the Same Goals
By Nelson Gareau
Two Ontario thoroughbred associations that share the common goal of promoting the thoroughbred breed are actively engaging with fans who may have an interest in getting involved in the various sports available to registered thoroughbreds.
One is the Eastern Canadian Thoroughbred Association (ECTA). Operating for a number of years now, the ECTA was formed to embrace all aspects of thoroughbred breeding and ownership. Horse owners and breeders, riders and admirers of thoroughbred horses make up the members of the ECTA.
Geographically, the association’s network encompasses areas from Eastern Ontario to Western
Quebec and even includes members that reside in Florida. Within this area, members are active in a wide variety of thoroughbred related interests including: breeding, line horses, racing, dressage, hunters, jumpers, and combined training.
Their mandate is to promote and sponsor the thoroughbred industry throughout their region and beyond. The highlight of every year is the annual awards program that recognizes achievements in numerous categories. ECTA also runs an annual horse show, brings in expert speakers and holds various clinics throughout the year.
Members share information and can learn more about the many aspects of the thoroughbred industry. Their
monthly newsletter ‘The Finish Line’ keeps everyone informed and often contains important articles or updates on relevant federal and provincial regulations, veterinarian advice and preventative care features, information on upcoming events and shows, as well as interesting profiles of members.
Membership to the ECTA is $35 per year. For membership information: Contact Joan Allum. Email Joan@oakhurstfarm.com
The other association is Thoroughbred Niagara. Founded in 2006, Thoroughbred Niagara was created to enhance all disciplines of thoroughbred ownership. The association brings together owners, trainers, breeders,

stud farms and thoroughbred fans located in the Niagara area...and beyond.
Their mandate is to promote the thoroughbred in the Niagara region by having Thoroughbred Niagara 'Day at the Races' at Fort Erie Racetrack, being involved in the Prince of Wales week - Fort Erie Racetrack's premier event; educating the public on racehorse ownership through owner & breeder awareness seminars and recognizing Niagara Breeders.
When asked why there is a Thoroughbred Niagara, Jacquie Karr, President of Thoroughbred Niagara, told The Game, “I felt there was a need for an association in the Niagara area where you can find local information on how to breed, race or sell. With Fort Erie being one of the nicest tracks in Canada and our wonderful stallions need to be promoted along with their offspring. It is amazing how many people actually want to own a racehorse, but don't know how.”
Thoroughbred Niagara is in the process of setting up a racing syndicate with Sovereign Award winning trainer Barbara Minshall. Anyone wanting to experience the thrill of owning a thoroughbred racehorse is encouraged to contact Thoroughbred Niagara for more details. Shares are $2500 and have tax benefits. There are only 25 shares available.
“This is an excellent and relatively low-risk way to get in on the exciting world of horse racing. Our Thoroughbred Niagara Syndication has Sovereign Award winning trainer Barbara Minshall at the helm. We only have a few shares left. If you’re interested, give us a call,” said Karr.
General membership to Thoroughbred Niagara is $35 per year. Professional membership is $100.00. For information: Phone (905) 941-2733
“I am using the Airways 101 on bleeders and horses with allergies. The results are great. I will be putting more of my horses on Airways 101.”
