Barb Fisher continued.......
“John Charalambous and my sister Catherine train my horses.” Says Richard, “Right now at Woodbine, we’ve got a pretty nice horse called Soul Rebel.”
(Soul Rebel’s most recent win was an $88,700 Allowance on May 13 at Woodbine)
Though she works strictly for Richard these days, Fisher has enormous affection and loyalty to Catherine and is impressed with the success that Day-Phillips has had as a trainer.
“You can get me emotional here.” She says “Having seen Catherine grow up, the success you are seeing now is the result of a very dedicated horse person.”
She takes a full moment to sum up her feelings.
“I’m proud of Catherine.”
Fisher tells me her favourite horse is Pax Nobiscum, which was trained by Dinny Day and subsequently Grant Pearce and was a multiple Stakes winner in Canada.
Pax Nobiscum won the Ohio Derby and the Marine Stakes at Woodbine.
There’s another four-footed obsession in Fisher’s life. She’s quite the dog lover. “As a hobby I breed golden retrievers.” she tells The Game. “My foundation Golden is 12 years old and called Trasher, but she has the new name of Granny because she is a granny and a sweetheart. I have a ten year old son of her and I have three young females that are absolute hooligans. I go under the name of Icamani, which is Lakota-Dakota for “walks alongside” because it’s typical of a golden retriever and their temperament; they’re happy to
be with you.”
As for 30 years in the same place,
clearly, Barb Fisher would not have it any other way.
“I love the lifestyle.” She says her face brightening. “To get up in the morning and walk outside and first of all be able to see beautiful horses out there, just the fact that I can take 15 minutes and go for a walk in the woods and see the birds and the deer. It makes for a special type of life.”

It was another terrific turn-out for the Toronto Thoroughbred Racing Club who held their first meeting of the 2007 season on May 2 at Woodbine.
The club is now in its
46th year and besides
their regular meetings at
Woodbine every month, they also have a few exciting visits to farms and other racetracks.
The Annual TTRC Awards Day at Woodbine is scheduled for June 17 and their annual USA Bus Trip is slotted in for August 21 to 26. Information on the club’s annual thoroughbred farm visit, backstretch tour and Fort Erie trips are still to be determined.
During the regular TTRC meetings there is usually a panel of guest speakers which include trainers, jockeys, agents and more! The TTRC is a fun and informative club where those new to horseracing can learn and for others who wish to share the excitement of the sport.
The annual membership fee is $45 each or $70 per couple. Meetings are held in Champions during Wednesday evening racing at Woodbine. You’re welcome to drop by as a guest to see what the Club is all about!
2007 Meeting Schedule: June 6; July 11; August 15; September 12; October 10; November 7 and December 5.

That jockeys Kent Desormeaux and Elvis Trujillo were each fined $2500 for misjudging the finish line in the third
race on April 26 at Keeneland. Trujillo’s horse was the winner by a nose over Desormeaux’s mount in the seven furlong race. Both jockeys stood up in the saddle at the alternate finish line used only for 1 1/16 mile races.
