No one likes to think about dying, but according to folklore, it’s the only guaranteed thing next
to taxes. Let’s face it, we’re all going to die and unless you are taking your death into your own hands, we simply don’t know when. I remember a few years back in the Woodbine kitchen and the subject of death came up. Everyone seated around the table agreed that the way they like to leave this world is to die in their sleep. For some reason, most of us think this is a peaceful way to go and that may be true. Unfortunately, we just assume that it’s peaceful, we really don’t know. Fact is, we in the developed countries are the only societies in the world that refuse to ac- knowledge the reality of aging and/or death. Undeveloped countries deal with death as a part of, well, life- it’s not a taboo subject. Maybe it’s

because they see it all the time. Maybe we’re afraid of our mortality because we’re so eas-
ily deluded into thinking we’re in control. We have products and procedures that we somehow think make us look younger or keep us younger, longer. I don’t know about you but I’ve seen more than one “star” that’s had work that’s made them hideous and hilarious at the same time. I recently saw Billy Crystal on TV- his forehead could re ect the sun and heat homes during the winter. Trust me Billy, you’re funny, you’re no leading man!
Get Tied On
In the past couple of months here at Woodbine, we’ve had two members of our backstretch community pass away. Neither of them have had wills. I asked both of them to make one, but they never got around to it. All the phone numbers
So here’s the pitch folks: I don’t care if you think you don’t have anything worthwhile to leave behind, or you can’t stand your next of kin, or you think you’re too young. Make out
a will, especially if you have kids. Go online, it’s that simple. If you’re not internet savvy, nd someone who is. Buy a will kit from any number of stores that sell them. Write a letter and have someone witness it. If you have a will, update it. Be speci c as to what you want done if you die or are on your deathbed. If you live in Ontario and are associated with the racing industry, thank you. You’ll be making my job a lot easier.
and contacts left behind have been dead ends. I’ve spent more time on the phone with police detectives than Columbo (ok, with my haircut it’s more like Kojak). I’m not the only one affected - both lived in the backstretch dormitory and both had as- sets. Many people are in limbo as we wait for the proper authorities to nish their

investigation. In Ontario, anything over $10,000 becomes property of the province - if you won the lottery and didn’t make a will, then Premier McGinty could balance his budget. As much as you and I like how our governments function, I’m sure we’d both feel better with some other organization getting the bene ts of our years of hard labour.

induce lactation in open mares and compel them to adopt an orphan foal. Mares are frequently in decent milk production within 10 days of the start of hormone treatments. Hormones which simulate effects of birth may be administered
Nash notes careful consideration was given

early weaning and which were not. Any one kindergarten group at Glengate would consist of up to 18 weanlings living together in a shed.
to the mare just prior to the introduction of the foal; this has proven to increase success rates. It is important to carefully choose mares that have produced at least one other foal and are proven to be good mothers. Maiden mares have typically not responded well to the treatments.
“The real advantage of the kindergarten was the horses being so social, and the need for that peer pressure to help them thrive,” Nash said.
Nutritional advancements in milk replacers allowed Nash con dence his young weanlings
The downside to these treatments is the milk produced by these mares does not contain colostrum, making it necessary still to nd a colostrum source for the orphan within the rst few hours of life.

“The companies producing milk replacers have nutritionists on staff,” Nash said. “Everything is there for these foals. It’s no different than baby formula for humans today.”
Despite valiant human efforts, it is inevitable that with each new life comes all the risks involved with survival. Fortunately, there are many resources available for orphan foals. If a nurse mare is deemed most appropriate and a foal must be displaced for her use, the care of that foal must be given great attention.
Another recent scienti c development allows for the bene ts of a nurse mare without the concern of a displaced foal. As discussed at a 2007 AAEP convention, drug protocols have been perfected that
Available nurse mares can be registered through the National Standardbred Association of Ontario, the British Columbia Nurse Mare and Colostrum Registry, and online at www. cyberfoal.com. (more info on cyberfoal page 28)
