Janet and Ron Motz were cleaning up their newborn filly when the mare rolled over and grunted. That was when they saw the foot of another foal trying make its way into the world. It was a colt.
The last few weeks have been trying for the Motz family. The mare has been taking care of the filly, they have called Jill, while the Motz’s have been taking care of the colt, they have named Jack.
The mare, Heidi’s Secret, by Langfuhr, was purchased out of the October Mixed Sale in foal to Porto Foricos. There was no indication of twins on any of the ultrasounds.
The Motz have been breeding horses for more than 15 years and they realize that surviving twins is not a good business decision, however they do believe that when Mother Nature gives you two live animals you have to do what is necessary.
Currently the filly, Jill, is a good size and gaining weight, while the colt, Jack, has a little catching up to do and only time will tell if he will ever become a racehorse.
“We’re hoping he will either be under 14.2hh or over 15.2hh because then he could make it in one market or another.” chuckled Ron.
Photo Left:
The filly named Jill was the twin that was born first.
She is a good size and is gaining weight.
The Motz are raising the foals individually.
Yearling Twins Doing Well at Silver Duck
Yearling twin colts, Brooks & Dunn, usually hang out together in the paddock at Silver Duck Stables where they were born last year.
The twins by stallion Apalachian Chief were a surprise for owners Tim & Suzanne Drake, who also own the stallion.
Brooks (left) was born first and Dunn (right) followed shortly after.
At this point, Tim and Suzanne say it is unlikely that Dunn, the smaller of the two twins, will be big enough to make it as a racehorse. “He is pretty fast but at this point he looks like he won’t be big enough.” said Suzanne who
says that both horses are registered, “It would be nice to get them both to the races but if Dunn is too small he will make a nice show horse.”
The Drakes have a two year-old
colt named, Late Night Legend, who is representing Apalachian Chief’s first crop of foals. The colt is named after the late Johnny Carson and will likely start this season at Woodbine with Suzanne.
