Changes to CTHS Yearling Sale
Blacksmith Murray Munroe: 1945-2005
Blacksmith Murray Munroe passed away peacefully on January 23, 2005 after suffering a heart attack.
Murray was described as a ‘family man’. His family meant a lot to him and he meant a lot to his family.
Murray was the eldest of nine children, and had four grown children with his wife Cathy and five “and a half” grandchildren. He is survived by his mother Anna.
He also enjoyed an extended family of clients in the thoroughbred industry where he worked as a blacksmith since the age of 16.
“He was like part of the family.” said Gail
Wood of Woodlands Farm where Murray had been a blacksmith since 1973, “He was a very strong man and an incredibly kind man. He was generous with his time and patient with the horses. He was a very spe- cial man.”
Susan Foreman of Kings Brook Farms resonated the words of Gail by saying that Murray was extremely loyal and kind and had a fantastic rapport with the horses.
“He had old school service.” said Susan, who had used the blacksmith services of Murray since 1992, “He would drive 100 miles to replace a shoe and not charge any- thing.”
Murray had worked all of his life, begin- ning his career at age sixteen as an appren- tice with his uncle Ernie Jay who was touted as the best blacksmith in North America.
Murray started out in Aurora and Richmond Hill with the show horses and eventually moved over to the thoroughbreds and had been the longtime blacksmith for not only Gail Wood and Sue Foreman, but Vera Simpson and Lynn Hindmarsh and others.
Murray had met his wife Cathy in 1963 after driving to the skating rink to meet friends in his brand new car. They had been married since 1966.
In a letter sent out to prospective yearling owners, the CTHS announced that the procedures for the 2005 CTHS Ontario Division Yearling Sales will differ from previous years.
The Sale is now divided into a “Selected” session and a “Preferred” session, with the Selected Yearlings being sold on September 6 and the Preferred Yearlings sold on September 9 and 10.
It was stated that as a result of input from buyers, consignors and
the CTHS membership, the Selected portion of the sale will contain fewer horses than in
2004.
Ryan Mahan and Associates
will once again determine which yearlings will be accepted into the Select Sale.
Those yearlings not accepted to the Selected portion will then be eligible for the Preferred portion and depending on the number of yearlings, there could be yearlings that remain. These horses will be guaranteed entry to sell at the CTHS “Mixed” Sale in the Fall.
The CTHS has also implemented an inspection fee of $100 per horse which will be credited back to the $450 Selected entry fee or the $350 Preferred entry fee. The yearling entry fee for the Mixed sale is $250 and inspection is not required.
The CTHS also plans to use a professional marketing firm and various incentives to attract buyers and encourage a successful sale.
Yearling Sale graduates who have gone on to be Champions including Mobil, A Bit ‘O Gold and One For Rose, each of which are millionaires and Sovereign Award winners in 2004. Other success stories include Sovereign winners Inish Glora, My Vintage Port and Simply Lovely.
