Caught Hold of Their Dream
Both Shelley Brett and Darlene Hayes have been involved with horses all their lives.
Shelley grew up on a farm and showed American Saddlebreds and Hunter Jumpers, while Darlene was born into the quarter horse world.
The pair met a few years ago and have now embarked on what they both agree is “their dream job”, managing a thoroughbred breeding farm.
Shelley and Darlene are the General Managers of Westover Hills, a new state of the art thorough- bred facility which provides broodmare care, foaling and yearling sales preparation services. Centrally located in Millgrove, just north of Hamilton, Westover Hills is shaping up to be first class facility with all the modern comforts for horses.
The 61 acre farm, which is owned by Communication and Radio Broadcasting’s Martin Zucker, was purchased earlier this year and negotiations are already underway for the purchase
or lease of an additional 50 to 80 acres of adjoining land.
An existing barn coupled with the newly constructed arena and barn area will house 42 padded stalls which will include foaling stalls with monitoring systems and individual double pot lighting.
Construction is ongoing at the farm with plans for an automated exercise machine and large outdoor sandring for yearling preparations as well as a 15 acre turf ‘leg-up’ gallop with a gentle rolling hill.
“The leg-up gallop will be wonderful for the young stock”, says the enthusiastic Darlene, “The is no expense being spared. This is going to be a top notch facility.”
Forty-five acres is to be utilized for paddocks and rolling pasture complete with 4 board oak fencing and run-in shelters.
Both Shelley and Darlene have years of experience with thoroughbreds in their extensive resumes.
Shelley worked with babies and yearlings at her Aunt Karen and Uncle Alan McArthur’s Karal Farms in Oshawa helping them with the foaling duties as well as legging up the yearlings in preparation for sales.
Darlene has managed eventing and show facilities and along with her husband Derrick, owned Hillsborough Farm, where they bred thoroughbred racehorses and Darlene prepped them for sale using Windfields Farm as an agent. There are currently two Hillsborough bred runners at Woodbine, 5-year-old Ignitro and 4-year-old Got Your Attention.
“We are having way too much fun doing what
Fortunate Prospect mare, Suchathing, with her Outofthebox filly who was born April 6 for Martin Zucker, owner of Westover Hills. The mare has been bred to D’Wildcat for 2005.
Suchathing is one of three mares which were initial purchases into the world of thoroughbred racing for Mr. Zucker. Mare Tennessee Thunder, by Thunder Gulch, is (overdue) in foal to Malibu Moon and is scheduled to be bred to Perfect Soul(IRE) for 2005; and mare Diamond for Sonja, by Sky Classic has a Mount Livermore filly at her side and is also going to Perfect Soul(IRE) for 2005.

we are doing.” said Shelley. “He (Martin Zucker) caught hold of our dream. He is a wonderful owner and this is a dream of his as well.”
Darlene mentioned that Westover Hills will be a facility that provides every possible convenience for the horses and clients. “This is going to be a top-notch facility with everything designed for the comfort of the horses.”
