Though these assumptions were
not incorrect, there was a more important purpose behind grooming. As we brushed and combed we were on the lookout for any irregulari-
ties - any bumps, scratches and such, which may have appeared on April since the last time she was groomed. April was ne all over, including her hooves, which Steve cleaned with a pick-like tool. Later in the day I, too, got a chance at this, but with Jr., Alex’s pony. I was assured that he would be a little more cooperative in allowing me to poke and prod at the bottoms of his feet.
Northern Hemisphere Foal
We had a foal born on Monday Jan 14 at our farm in King Township that has very unusual white markings on its face. The lly who bred to be a Thoroughbred race horse is by the sire Rock Hard Ten and her dams name is Minstrel Show. The white marking on her face looks just like a map of North and South America and the whorl on her forehead is exactly where King Township
is on the map.
Our farm is called “Windways Farm”
and is owned by Jeff and Annabel Begg.

We warmed up in the tack room
with a cup of tea. While waiting for
the water to boil, we soaped and sponged tack. Steve was meticulous with this, getting under the clasps
and knots. “Don’t want the saddle or bridle coming off in the midst of a gallop,” he explained. As I was never much good at shining my boots in the army, I paid particular attention to all the nooks and crevices. As we cleaned, the gallop boys came in for their break. I hadn’t seen Steven (known to Game readers as Evensteven) since last year, and soon enough we were talking about writing and writers. I men- tioned to him my most recent literary discovery, the horse writings of Sherwood Anderson, and he mentioned to me a backstretch-related documen- tary that he was working on. Prospects looked promising on both fronts.

The grumbling in my stomach indicated that it was time for lunch. Before I left, however, I helped
Alex feed the horses. He mixed this with that, that with this and chopped some carrot into it. Throughout the process, he explained very clearly
and in detail all about the nutritional needs of horses and their eating habits. Not much of this was sinking in.
My stomach was thinking its own thoughts, and my mind had absorbed about all that it could. I delivered lunch to Jr. (who attempted my belt for dessert) and then thanked Alex for all he had shown me. We shook hands. “See you again next Sunday,” he said. Words I was glad to hear.

The most expensive horse ever sold at public auction, The Green Monkey, has been retired and will stand at Hartley/ De Renzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala in 2009. Purchased for a record $16 million, The Green Monkey retires winless in his three career starts with earnings of $10,440.
That a lly, who is likely to be the ill-fated George Washington’s only offspring, was born on February 4 at the Irish National Stud.
George Washington had a short spell at stud in early 2007 at Coolmore after reportedly covering 50 mares, the majority of whom failed to conceive.
He was put back in training in 2007 and nished fourth and third in Group 1 company in Europe prior to break-
