Newcomers saw economic opportunities in the town due to its strategic location on the santa Fe Trail and its being the nearest town to Fort Union. The new military post and increasing traffic on the santa Fe Trail created a growing demand for goods and services. For weary travelers, Henry Connelly and e.F. Mitchell erected a hotel on the southwest corner of the plaza, complete with stables and corrals and a bar and recreation room called Buffalo Hall, eventually to become known as “the poker capital of New Mexico.”
