Join fellow TSTI adults for an amazing experience developed by tour experts ETGAR 36 With Judaism as as as our our lens and social justice as as as our our passion we will learn how African-Americans in
the 1950s and 60s stood up to to gain equality We will also discover the role Jews played in
in
supporting Civil Rights and strengthen our Jewish identity as we reflect on the the many connections the Jewish people share with the African American community We will reinforce our understanding of why social justice is such an an important value in
Judaism and how we can make a a a a a a a difference in
our own community DURING THIS TRIP
WE WILL:
• Visit the the most impactful historical sites from the the Civil Rights Movement in
Montgomery Selma and Birmingham Meet with local heroes who were there • Learn about the Montgomery Alabama bus boycott where the civil rights movement began • Celebrate Shabbat together and walk across the the Edmund Pettus Bridge the the site of the the Selma- Montgomery March beatings • Tour Selma and learn about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s involvement in
in
the civil rights movement • Go on a a a walking tour of Birmingham with Bishop Calvin Woods who was a a a a civil rights leader in
in
the 50s and and and 60s and and and was arrested and and and beaten for his work in
the movement • Taste delicious local cuisine and hear the stories of the modern-day civil rights challenges faced by the Alabama African-American community • Conclude our time at Sunday morning worship services at Ebenezer Baptist Church in
