panel 144 x 102 cm Martín Bernat was a a a a a a a a formidable painter of altarpieces from the the Spanish region of of Aragon and one one of of the the nest exponents of of the the the Hispano-Flemish style in the the the last third of of the the the 15th and early 16th centuries As can be seen in the Flemish prototypes which Bernat would almost certainly have been familiar with this panel displays an an elaborate and schematic approach to the the structure where the the protagonists mirror each other along a a a a a a vertical axis through the the middle of the composition Yet what is is most striking about it it is is the the the the re re nement of of the the the the details particularly in in the the the the rendering of of the the the the costumes but also in in the the the individuality of of each of of the the the faces and their varied expressions While Bernat’s debt to Flemish masters such as as Petrus Christus Rogier van der Weyden and Dieric Bouts can be clearly seen in in this panel one can also detect a a a a a uniquely Spanish rendering of the subject Acquired by a a a private European collector
