Afunny thing happened on the way to Mexico and the United States dominating at the 2024 Copa America: they didn’t. The good news for those organizing the 2026 World Cup was that one of their hosts did look impressive and hold their own against the best from South America: Canada. Les Rouges proved their mettle in the
summer competition, earning a fourth place showing and earning plaudits for their rugged, determined effort.
Heading into the tournament expectations were modest for Canada and with good reason: they just hired their new coach Jesse Marsch in May. Marsch, who had previously coached for Leeds and Red Bull Salzburg, came to Canada under interesting circumstances. With the Canadian Soccer Association in dire financial straits, the CSA had to reach out to the three Canadian
