To underline operational losses, consider Operation Chastise or the Dambusters Raid on the night of 16-17 May 1943 when nineteen Lancasters from the RAF 617 Bomber Squadron with 133 aircrew onboard attacked the Mōhne, Eder and Sorpe hydroelectric dams in the Ruhr Valley. Eight aircraft failed to return and 53 crew died including 14 of the 30 Canadians. Three others became POWs including one Canadian.
