are recorded on one scale interval. Thus, “10 mm” or “CMS” helps to iden- tify the scale size avoiding any doubt.
Finally, it is important that the scale be placed so that it can be cropped out on the picture in the printing process, should this be necessary. In this way, objects can be printed at the correct scale but the (sometimes) unsightly rules do not have to be included in the final illustration. The figure caption describes that the scale, or a uniform and standard scale, for a par- ticular publication can be placed adjacent to the photograph (see for example Figure 12.4).
