R. PRICE & K. MUCKELROY: KENNEMERLAND
DALE, DE VINCK MOET STAEN, OF DE WERELT SOV VER GAAN-ANN0 1664 (The mill must grind, the sun must sink, the finch must stand or the world will end.) On the reverse is a view of a town, labelled ‘Haerlem’.
4. Another box similar to 3, but only the lid and the base have survived. On the lid is a representation of a man holding a fish and a woman holding a bird, with the inscription: HET VISIEN IS GOET, HET VOGELEN IS WEL S O 0 SOET. (The fishing is good; the fowling is sweet as well). On the base is another view of a town, this time labelled ‘Alckmaer’.
Playing dice. 16 matching bone dice have been recovered from the same piece of concretion as the above boxes (site F).
Coins. Also from this concretion have come 59coins.Theyareallcorrodedtosomeextent, although some are in quite good condition. Mr Henderson has supplied the following list:

Rings. A gold ring of relatively small diameter was found in site F, not associated with any other jewellery. It weighs 50 grains, and is of very high quality gold, not far short of 24 carats. Its size suggests that it belonged to a lady; one is naturally reminded of the notoriousladieswhomanagedtoslipaboard Dutch East Indiamen in considerablenumbers (Boxer, 1963). Seven cheap finger rings were also found in site F.
Pendants. Two heart-shaped pendants of pewter were found in site F, one still attached to a brass chain. They both bore curious allegorical designs typical of the mid-17th century. Associated with these were four brass danglers, which were also apparently costume jewellery. However, the chain surviving on
one of them is so fine that it could probably only have been worn in the hair.
Leatherwork. In site F and the surrounding area there were several scraps of leather, much of which was not identifiable. However, three pieces were evidently shoe soles, and at least two could have been heels. Also in site F, and lying in a patch of mud, was a leather sword scabbard, suitable for a fine dress sword. No metal fittings were found on it, and there were none in its immediate locality.
Clay pipes. A number of clay pipe frag- ments were found in every excavation site,
