Unfortunately cases of urgent intervention for the protection of heritage arise, which are often caused by a lack of awareness. This was the case for a 15th century river barge that was almost completely destroyed
in a construction project near Nijmegen in the Netherlands. The destruction was noticed
by a local diver alerting the authorities. In such instances, it is most helpful to have a standard project design at hand for quick evaluation and coordination. The readiness of such a plan will help in the deployment of capacity and funds. Further steps can be added as soon as responsibilities and the financial framework
of archaeological intervention become clear.
