Green Sprangletop
(Leptochloa dubia)
Green Sprangletop is a native warm season perennial bunch grass that is primarily used for grazing and erosion control. It is highly palatable and nutritious to all classes of livestock.
Green Sprangletop is extremely drought tolerant. It grows two to three and a half feet tall. It is also cold tolerant.
This is a short-lived grass but because of its fast germination, quick growth and easy es- tablishment, it maintains itself well. Green Sprangletop is most often used in range and reclamation blends as a nurse crop for other species providing soil cover and pro- tection for other slower growing grasses.
Green sprangletop grows well on rocky sites as well as sandy soils and heavier soils. It is adapted throughout Texas, southern New Mexico, southeast Arizona and Florida. It is a popular grass among wildlife enthusi- asts because of the size of the seed for food and density of forage for habitat.
Seed in March or April 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 inch deep in a well-prepared seed bed at 2 pure live seed pounds per acre on rangeland. The seeds are slick and can be planted using a regular type seed drill.
