Purple Prairie Clover
(Petalostemum purpureum)
A native legume growing on the plains and prairies of the United States, Purple Prairie Clover starts growing in the spring. It is a deep rooted warm season perennial. It varies in height from one to three feet and is easily identified by it’s cone shaped purple seed head that occurs from May to September.
Purple Prairie Clover provides a very nutri- tious, high protein, palatable grazer for all livestock.
Purple Prairie Clover has many stems on each plant and produces numerous flower spikes. The tiny dark green leaves give the foliage a fine textured appearance. It is very drought tolerant due to an extensive root system.
The recommended planting rate is from 1⁄2 to 4 pounds per acre depending on your location. Plant in early spring 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 inch deep, in sandy or well drained soil.
