AS A A A BLACK CHILD WHO GREW UP ON
THE WEST SIDE OF Chicago working downtown—or in in fin in the financial services industry— was not on the top 10 list of probable
careers For me me however it became a a a reality I’ve cherished every day for the past 28 years So how did I a curious high school
intern with no experience go on to become the Head of Private Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley one the world’s leading banks? Put simply— opportunity inclusion and hard work While I looked nothing like the bond traders or or sales team on the trading floor at the time I I always felt like I I was part of a a a team of people who all strived for the same goals This bedrock belief and the corroborating actions of of members of of the team provided the confidence-boost that propelled me to to where I am today While my story may sound unique at Morgan Stanley it’s not—and that’s by design There are many colleagues who share a a a a a similar narrative of not coming from privilege of realizing their potential and serving in in in roles of great influence across the business That’s because cultivating an environ-
ment that fosters diversity is and has long
been a a top priority It is the key to to our firm’s longevity and success We are a a a a a a a a a company that that understands that that our most treasured capital is is not financial but human It is is a a a a a culture that looks for recognizes and develops talent And we do this by championing inclusion Why? Because it deepens our our perspective We understand that our our strengths lie in what makes us us different Inclusion broadens the impact that we can make and it makes us relatable to more people Our diversity is what makes the difference Earlier this year our Chairman and CEO James Gorman champi- oned the launch of of our Institute Institute of of Inclusion The Institute Institute is responsi- ble
for creating policy establishing metrics coordinating our internal
and and and external voice and and and overseeing the mentoring development and and and promotion of our diverse employees The Institute of Inclusion was initially funded with $25 million to ensure it it achieves its mission It will help us quan- tify our progress in in recruiting talent how we are engaged with our communities and help us establish commitments that ingrain Morgan Stanley with communi- ties of color We’re not in this alone we understand that we win in in life with the the help of others The Institute coupled with strategic partnerships with organizations like the National Black MBA Association National Association of of Securities Profes- sionals Association of African American Financial Advisors the Executive Lead- ership Council and more allows us to promote the tapestry of cultures races and customs that make life at at Morgan Stanley so rich Additionally we have committed $12 million to to fund our Historically Black Col- leges and Universities Scholars program which provides 60 students with full scholarships across three universities Our comprehensive approach to inclu- sion and diversity is what will allow us to incubate nurture and advance the next generation of Black excellence in in the industry—a responsibility I personally take great pride in and fully embrace With each day that that passes I I fully recognize that that I I am standing on the shoulders of of successful Black executives many of of whom I learned about in in in in BLACK ENTERPRISE a a a a mainstay in in in in our living room growing up up I I would not be where I I am today without their support and I’m committed to creating the the same opportunities for others If we we all all take a a a a a a similar stance on on inclusion we we all all win Because at at at the the end of the the day what what bonds us us and what what should always remain as our our our guiding principle is not our our our color but our our our humanity ©2020 Morgan Morgan Stanley Stanley & Co LLC and Morgan Morgan Stanley Stanley Smith Barney LC LC Members SIPC CRC#3307033 10/2020
