Urea is a constituent of the so-called natural moisturising factors, abbreviated as NMF, a complex of diferent active agents in the skin that bind moisture in the skin and so keep it smooth and elastic. The NMF contains many other substances apart from urea, such as glycerine, pyrolidonic carboxylic acid, lactic acid, amino acid and further components. With the artiicial supply of urea for dry or very dry skin
with the help of a skin care product the moisture retaining capacity of the skin
can be restored temporarily. If products containing urea are used regularly the barrier function of the skin will improve or be restored, a fact that could be veriied
in diferent studies on dry skin. In this context the skin’s tolerance towards irritant substances increased as well.
