Bedpan rinsers – Hygiene monitoring
Bedpans and urinals can act as vehicles for the spread of microorganisms, particularly the pathogens that cause gastroenteritis. Processing this care equipment is therefore important. Because automatic processing of bedpan rinsers is more effective than manual processing, this type of processing is preferred.
The recommendation of regulatory authorities and public health offices is to check bedpan rinsing equipment annually (if used exclusively for care equipment) or every six months (if used for other medical devices). Thermal bedpan rinsers are generally checked using a data logger or thermal logger while chemo-thermal equipment is checked using biological indicators, e.g. metal process challenge devices contaminated with the bacterium Enterococcus faecium.
