Goals are like magnets that attract us to higher ground and new horizons. (Lessin,
1999)
There are THREE types of goals.
1) Outcome – the end result, the BIG
Prize – e.g. win the championship
2) Performance – What I want to
achieve. The short term wins to get to the big prize e.g. 90% tackle success rate per game
3) Process – How I will do it. The actions I need to do consistently, e.g. keep my body fat below 20%
Goals work because they
• Focus attention on specific tasks • Increase effort and intensity
• Encourage persistence
• Promote the development of new
task strategies (e.g., problem- solving strategies)
Athletes who set performance (rather than outcome) goals experience less anxiety and more confidence and satisfaction.
Task : Set a performance goal – Remember the composure characterises you looked at yesterday.
