Cornflower is a member of the daisy family noted for its vibrant azure blue flowers. The plant is called cornflower because it naturally occurs near field crops, namely corn. The plant is also
known as Bachelor's Button and Boutonniere Flower because young men once wore the flower in the lapel of their jacket to draw attention to their eligibility status.
Magick - Blue Cornflowers magickal uses include enhancing psychic abilities, fertility, love, sex, and abundance. The flowers are used to decorate altars and the dried flower is carried in sachets or amulets to attract lovers.
These pretty little flowers can also make a wonderful mystical blue-colored handmade ink – which certainly has more magickal properties than store-bought for use in hand- worked spell books, etc.
Its Latin botanical name centaurea derives from the name Chiron, the centaur in Greek mythology, whom the plant cured when an arrow tipped with the blood of Hydra wounded him. Since then the plant has been assumed to drive away snakes. The cyanus part comes from Cyanus, a young man from Greek mythology, who loved the plant so much he spent all his time in corn fields making garlands from them. When he died, the goddess Flora transformed him into the plant.
Healing - Cornflower is an easy-to-grow flower that is as practical as it is pretty. Known for its ability to curb anxiety, reduce joint pain, soothe irritated skin, calm an upset stomach and reduce eye swelling, it is easy to see how the cornflower can be used to solve numerous health ailments. In addition, cornflowers contain properties that enhance immune system functioning.
Boiling flowers in water and making a hot compress can ease the pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and muscle soreness. Leaving the hot compress in place for as long as possible works best. For eye strain, apply a compress made from one tablespoon of flowers and one cup of boiling water. Allow the mixture to steep for five minutes and to cool completely before applying.
