This technique was discovered by an eminent American clinical psychologist ‘Dr Callahan’ who specialised in anxiety disorders and emotional problems.
He had a particularly difficult case with a patient he had been treating for 18 months with little success.
She was terrified of water, including simple things like bathing her children, showering or even washing‐up. All were a trauma for her. She would have frequent headaches and even nightmares and had been going from doctor to doctor, therapist to therapist for years trying to get a
29 solution, but still her phobia persisted.
Dr Callahan tried everything he could from hypnosis to cognitive therapy, relaxation therapy, bio feed back, rational emotive therapy and systematic desensitisation. Dr Callahan’s hopes were that eventually he could get his patient to dip her feet in his swimming pool. But all the treatments achieved were to give his patient a blinding headache and high panic attacks.
Nothing worked.
One day the patient mentioned that when she felt the fear regarding water she felt it in her stomach area. Dr Callaghan had studied the meridian system that Chinese acupuncturists had used, and realised that the meridian relating to the stomach
