Sandalwood is a class of woods from trees in the genus Santalum. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and, unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance
for decades. Sandalwood oil is extracted from the woods for use. Sandalwood is a slow-growing wood with a rich, complex scent. Indigenous to Southeast Asia, Sandalwood is one of the most expensive woods in the world. It has a long history of use in the spiritual practices of both the East and West. Sandalwood is labor-intensive to propagate, as it requires both a host tree and adequate sunlight to nourish itself. Sandalwood trees can take up to 80 years to reach full maturity. The concentration of scent in the heartwood increases as the tree ages. Trees that are planted today will not reach their aromatic peak for two generations.
Healing -
Do Not Consume!
Sandalwood essential oil provides a wide range of benefits – eases nausea, gastritis and increases production of gastric juices. It helps the body extract the excess liquids, causes the muscles to contract and simulates the urine production. It also has antiseptic properties that can help in dealing with infections.
It is also a valuable ingredient in many cosmetic products as it helps remedy cracked and dry skin.
Ayurveda, an Indian old healing tradition also has a great use of Sandalwood. They use burning incense sticks with Sandalwood aroma to release natural antiseptics and cleanse the air.
Magick -
Sandalwood corresponds to the Moon and Water. While it may seem strange to put a dry desert tree in the elemental category of Water, the assignment harkens back to the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda.
It is popular in blended incense and combines well with the sacred resins Frankincense and Myrrh. Sandalwood is considered to have a very high vibration used for consecrating ritual tools and ideal for devotional and angelic magic. Sandalwood has a calming, sedative effect and aids in meditation. In ritual formulas, it is used for purification, consecration, relaxation, and peace.
Mix Sandalwood with Lavender to call good spirits, or with Jasmine for peaceful dreams. A blend of Sandalwood and Acacia (one of its host plants) is said to boosts psychic powers.
